Tale of the game

Manchester United will have poor memories of their last visit to Upton Park, the 4-0 Carling Cup thrashing in November.

On that occasion, Jonathan Spector and Carlton Cole scored two goals apiece.
But in the Premier League United have been dominant, winning the last seven meetings home and away.
West Ham last beat Sir Alex Ferguson’s team in December 2007, when late goals from Anton Ferdinand and Matthew Upson earned the home side a 2-1 win.
But West Ham have gone 186 minutes without conceding a goal and keeping successive clean sheets, against Stoke and Tottenham -- the first time they have achieved that in the Premier League since February 2010.
A third clean sheet would represent their longest run without conceding since March 2009.
However, Manchester United have won their last three games in all competitions but have failed to score more than one goal in each of their last outings three in the Premier League.
But they have gone nine games since their failed to score a league goal.
Away from home, however, they have won just four of their 15 games, taking just 20 of their 63 points on the road.
West Ham, by contrast, have won 19 of their 32 points at Upton Park and, in their last four games played on April 2 are unbeaten, winning two and drawing two.
United are unbeaten on this day in their last six; they last lost on April 2 in 1970 – at home to Manchester City.
West Ham test Frederic Piquionne, who missed the 0-0 draw at Spurs with a foot injury.
Manchester United will be without Paul Scholes and Jonny Evans through suspension.
And John O’Shea, Anders Lindegaard, Owen Hargreaves and Rio Ferdinand are still absent while they test Nemanja Vidic and Rafael Da Silva.

Mourinho: I was nearly England boss

Jose Mourinho has revealed he came within "hours" of taking the England manager's job before the appointment of Fabio Capello.

The Real Madrid boss said he would have been Steve McClaren's successor in 2007 had it not been for a last-minute change of heart.
The Portuguese, who left Chelsea in September 2007, two months before McClaren was sacked by England, explained he decided late in the day he wanted to remain in club management.
Mourinho said in an interview with French sports daily l'Equipe: "I was hours away - I almost signed up for the England national team.
"But at the last minute I began thinking, 'I am going to coach a national side, there will be one match a month and the rest of the time I will be in my office or overseeing matches. And then to have to wait until the summer to compete in a European Championship or a World Cup'? No, it wasn't for me.
"So at the last moment I pulled back, preferring to wait for the right job to come along, a good club, a challenge that could motivate me. That was Inter (Milan)."
Mourinho was out of the game for nine months before being appointed Inter coach in June 2008, leaving them for Madrid last summer.
"When I left Chelsea, the first month was fantastic. I went to Africa, to Japan, I did tons of things I had not been able to do," he added.
"The second month was also good, but from the third onwards it was horrible, just awful."
Mourinho admitted he also came close to taking the Paris St Germain job after leaving Stamford Bridge, but decided against it as he was not convinced by Ligue 1's quality.
Asked why he did not take the PSG post, he said: "I do not know. Perhaps because of the feeling that England, Spain or Italy are more powerful leagues, and we must make the most of the best years of our career by working at the highest level."
The Football Association were quick to respond to Mourinho's comments.
"Fabio was our first choice for England manager," a spokesman said. "We have made that clear from the outset."

For the first 45 minutes of Saturday night’s 1-1 tie against Argentina, the United States national team seemed entirely focused on trying not to lose. Coach Bob Bradley opened the game with a defensive-minded 4-5-1 formation and placed 10 — and sometimes all 11 — players behind the ball as he tried to keep the dangerous Argentines off the scoreboard.
The strategy worked for about 40 minutes, until Argentina’s Lionel Messi made a few nifty moves down the left flank and set up Esteban Cambiasso a few minutes before halftime. The Americans had all but ignored the offensive side of their game and were losing. Something had to change.
Something did. Bradley made two substitutions and — more important — shifted to a more aggressive 4-4-2 formation that instantly infused energy and ambition into the American attack. The United States responded with a gritty performance that pushed Argentina, ranked fourth in the world, to its limits.
